Lo scorso novembre sono stata a New York, una vacanza breve che però mi ha lasciato molto, tante immagini impresse nella memoria e tante emozioni che rimarranno per sempre dentro di me, insieme alla nostalgia.....

Emozioni come quella provata ascoltando il suono di un pianoforte a Washington Square Park.....l'artista del mio ricordo musicale è Colin Huggins.

Un pianoforte a coda, un pubblico eterogeneo che ascolta attento, seduto sulle panchine, passanti frettolosi che si voltano solo un istante verso di lui,  qualcuno si ferma pochi minuti ad ascoltarlo, lascia un dollaro nel cestino che è nei pressi del pianoforte e, probabilmente a malincuore, riprende la sua strada

Last November I was in New York, a short holiday but one that has given me very much, many images impressed in my mind and a lot of emotions that will always stay inside  me together with nostalgia.....

Emotions like the one I felt when I heard the sound of a piano in Washington Square Park ..... the artist in my musical memory is Colin Huggins.

A grand piano, a heterogeneous audience who listen attentively, seating on the garden seats, passers-by in a hurry who turn their heads just for a moment toward him, someone stops for a while to listen to him, then leave a dollar in his basket next to the piano and then, probably unwillingly, get back to his or her way.

Non sono una conoscitrice della musica classica, mi lascio guidare dall'istinto o, forse di più, dal cuore, la musica mi piace quando sento che esprime dei sentimenti, quando riesce ad emozionarmi e la musica di Colin Huggins mi ha emozionato

Delle note in lontananza sono state il primo richiamo, mi sono avvicinata un po’ e mi sono seduta su una panchina, la musica continuava, mi sono spostata per avvicinarmi di più ed ascoltare meglio. E' stato bellissimo, ascoltare la musica e contemporaneamente osservare il pubblico, uno spettacolo dentro allo spettacolo!

Era come trovarsi dentro ad un film

I am not an expert of classical music, I let my instinct or, even more, my heart, guide me, music likes me when I feel that it expresses feelings, when it is able to  affect me and Colin Huggins's music affected me.

Some notes from a distance were the first call, I came a little nearer and I sat on a garden seat while the music was going on, I changed my place to get nearer and to listen better. It was wonderful, to listen to music and observe the audience at the same time, a show inside a show!

It was like to find oneself inside a movie.

Ho acquistato il suo CD ed ho preso il suo biglietto da visita molto particolare, stampato con caratteri manuali. Sito web, numero di telefono e...... l'invito a chiedergli l'amicizia su Facebook.

La sua amicizia l'ho chiesta subito, appena tornata a casa. Poter seguire la sua pagina, vedere le foto ed i video, continuare ad ascoltare la sua musica è come essere ancora in quel parco.... almeno con la fantasia

Il CD si intitola semplicemente "Vol.1". La prima volta che l' ho ascoltato sono rimasta stupita perché mi aspettavo una musica da sala di registrazione, senza nessun disturbo, invece è una registrazione dal vivo, nel senso che è stata fatta "in loco". Ci sono brani registrati in strada, hanno come sottofondo i rumori della Grande Mela, comprese le sirene dell'ambulanza....... o forse della polizia. Ci sono brani registrati nella metropolitana, in certi punti la musica è quasi completamente coperta dal rumore dei treni. Eccezionalmente reale!

I immediately asked for his friendship, as soon as I got back home. To be able to  attend his web page, to see his pictures and videos, to continue listening his music is like to be again in that park ........ at least in my imagination.

The CD is entitled simply “Vol.1”. The first time I listened to it I was surprised because I was waiting for a music played in a recording studio, without a noise, on the contrary it is a live recording in the sense that it was done “in the place”. There are extracts recorded in the street, they contain the noises of the Big Apple as a background, including the siren of an ambulance ....... or perhaps the police. There are extracts recorded in the subway, at some points the music is nearly completely covered by the noise of the trains. Exceptionally real!

Colin Huggins mi aveva davvero incuriosito ed ho voluto documentarmi per conoscere la sua storia. Al giorno d'oggi è facile, digitando su Google Colin Huggins New York sono apparse tantissime pagine ma  è stato sufficiente entrare nel suo sito per iniziare a conoscerlo un po’. 

Inizia con "welcome" e continua raccontandosi.......

Ha vissuto a Decatur (Georgia) ed è arrivato a New York nel 2003 inseguendo le sue ambizioni di artista. Ha lavorato come accompagnatore musicale in teatro fino a quando nel 2007 portò per la prima volta un pianoforte all'aperto, in Union Square. Dopo soltanto poche uscite capì che quella era la direzione giusta per la sua vita, riusciva a portare gioia agli altri e a se stesso.

 

Colin Huggins really aroused my curiosity and I wanted to find documents to know his story. Nowadays it is easy, by tipping on Google Colin Huggins New York there appeared a lot of pages but it was enough to enter his web site to start knowing him a little.

He starts with a “Welcome” and continues reporting about himself.

He lived in Decatur (Georgia) and then he got to New York in 2003 following his ambitions as an artist. He worked as a musical accompanist in theatres until in 2007 he took a piano to the open for the first time, in Union Square.After only a few going out he knew that it was the right direction in his life, he was able to bring happiness to others and to himself.

Anche se non suonava musica creata da lui capiva di stare "creando" una maniera di fare arte.

Da allora ha portato i pianoforti in tutta Manhattan, compresi luoghi come Time Square, Grand Central, Union Square, 34th Street, Madison Park ed ora il più delle volte a Washington Square Park. Per diverso tempo, nel 2008-2009, si è avventurato con il pianoforte nella metropolitana ma poi si è stancato dell'aria viziata e della mancanza di luce solare.

Even if he was not playing music created by himself he understood he was “creating” a way to perform arts.

From then on he took his pianos to all Manhattan, including places like, Time Square, Grand Central. Union Square, 34th Street, Madison Park and now, most of the time, to Washington Square Park. For a while, in 2008-2009, he ventured with his piano to the subway but then he got tired of the vicious air and the lackness of sunlight.
